Remarkable Performance in Crash
The
New York State Department of Transportation has purchased over 300
American Honda Civic GX dedicated natural gas sedans since
production of the vehicle began in 1995.
These vehicles operate all over the State of New York.
In
the early summer of 2002, one of NYSDOT’s Civic GXs was involved
in a very serious accident.
A
NYSDOT employee was driving a dedicated natural gas Honda Civic GX
on a public highway in the early summer of 2002.
He was struck from behind by a fully loaded gasoline tanker
truck.
The
driver walked away. There
was no leak or rupture of the natural gas fuel tank or system.
According
to the NYSDOT fleet manager, the accident investigator stated
that the strength provided by compressed natural gas fuel tank
probably saved the driver’s life.
Additional information is available
on the safety of natural gas
vehicles and fuel facilities.
The
Coalition is grateful to the New York State Department of
Transportation for sharing this information.
