Alternative fuels, as
defined by the Energy Policy Act of 1992
(EPAct), include
biodiesel,
electricity,
ethanol, hydrogen,
methanol, natural
gas, and propane/LPG.
These
fuels are being used worldwide in a variety of vehicle applications.
Alternative fuels reduce the nation's
dependence on imported petroleum. Using these alternative fuels in
vehicles can also reduce harmful pollutants and exhaust
emissions. In addition, most of these fuels can be domestically
produced and derived from renewable sources. Learn more about the
benefits
of alternative fuels and vehicles.
Check
out the alternative fuels pages
for specifics on each of the alternative fuels - fuel properties,
their chemical makeup, benefits, current applications, and emerging
markets.
You
can compare
alternative fuels properties, including benefits, environmental
impacts, and more, using a variety of tools developed by the U.S. Department of
Energy.
